The term how to make money with a blog is so cliche. You can read countless blog posts on the subject, and it is really quite disappointing, when you finish reading these posts, and you find out that you just wasted ten minutes of your life on a blog that was no help.
Hopefully, you won’t say that about this post. A lot of people use the “How To Make Money With A Blog” posts to actually make money themselves, throwing affiliate links at the reader from every corner.
I am going to tell and show you how I make money blogging and what works for me.
How To Make Money With A Blog
The absolute number one thing that you need to remember when it comes to monetizing your site is to always remember that your reader is the most important part of your blog. It’s not the SEO, and it’s not the social media, or any other strategies that you could use to get them there. These are important, but secondary to the reader only.
When you have more of an appreciation for the reader, then you will be more likely to create awesome content that can help them! People say this, and I’m sure you have heard it before, that “Content is King”. I would like to throw a wrench in this saying right now. Content isn’t king. Your reader is king and content is their queen.
So I really want to drive home the importance of writing for your readers. Forget Google, and forget trying to rank on the first page for a second. That’s all well and good, and you should try to shoot for this, but don’t let it interfere with your top priority on your blog, which goes hand in hand with reader and content.
Have I made myself clear yet?
Content is important because your reader is important.
Once you put your reader first you will actually start to see better results on your blog. I actually overheard a guy say the other day that you don’t want too many outbound links in a blog post. That’s not thinking about the reader. If you can’t provide them with the information that they need to succeed, or to answer the question of the obvious post that you’re trying to write, then you should give them the opportunity to find these facts elsewhere.
They will remember that you were the one that directed them to the site that helped them. This will help you in the future because in doing that, you have created a faithful reader that trusts you to give them the most out of what they are looking for.
Ok, Now More On How To Make Money With A Blog
The first thing that you may need to do is grade your website to see how it ranks. You will need to choose a competitors site to do this, so choose someone that is awesome. I actually chose Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger Site as my competition seeing as how he is probably the most successful blogger online.
That’s a good tool to get you more acquainted with where you are, but there are still some changes that you can make or tweaks that you can do to make some money.
Change #1-Improve Your Reach
The first thing that every blogger needs to know is that the more people you can reach, then the more opportunities you have to make money with your blog. Your blog is like an island. Everyone else’s blogs are islands all around you. You need to create “boats” to reach these people around you. Stupid analogy, I know, but you get the picture.
Making connections is important. The best thing that you can do is to join a blogging community that will extend your reach. The main purpose of the link I just gave you is that when you join this blogging community, you are putting yourself out there for other bloggers to meet you, and you them. Never mind the instant boost in traffic that you get from aligning yourself with a community like this, you are instantly in a lot of people’s circles when you join.
These are people that would not have otherwise found your site. These are people that would not have shared your posts and articles to their social media platforms that they are signed up with. So the benefit of joining this community will help you in more ways that you can even imagine!
But that still doesn’t tell me how to make money with a blog
Let me digress for a moment. All of these things that I will share with you are not “close to the chest” secrets. It won’t be a secret formula that will make you rich overnight. The ideas that I will share with you are those that will help you branch out. This, in turn, leads you down the right path to make some money.
Change #2-Fix your social media strategy.
Have you ever been stingy with your shares? Lol, what I mean by this is you have found yourself on someone’s blog, and it’s a pretty good article, yet you still didn’t share that post! Why not? Perhaps it was a competitors site, or perhaps you may have felt that this person’s blog makes more than enough money without you participating in it! Could it have been out of jealousy?
When you with-hold sharing great posts you are indirectly affecting the reader. *Please see above!* Remember that the reader is the most important part of your site!
Share. Share often and regularly. When you share other people’s posts you are not only allowing someone in your groups and circles the opportunity to benefit from the information, you are also interacting with another blogger! When you don’t share, you indirectly affect your relationship with that blog owner. Since the point of this is to change the way you can improve your reach, you need to stop sharing your own stuff, stop hoarding the share buttons, and actually put that post on your social media sites!
Sharing promotes to others that you are there interacting on their posts, and sharing their articles. This is what people want to see. Not just bloggers. People in general. Before they visit your site, you are going to have to build trust with them, and you can do that by sharing.
Generating massive traffic from social media is possible. And, it’s possible to survive solely on the traffic from these platforms. However, you have to be social to get them! Even the Bible has got it right! Proverbs 18:24 says, “A man that has friends, must be friendly first!”
How is sharing going to affect the way I make money?
Before I joined that blogging community that I listed above, one of the best ways to get the attention of a blogger that was more successful than I was was to share their stuff. People notice this. When you share the updates and posts of a blogger who is more successful than you, or may have more followers and friends than you do, usually the end result is that blogger will, in turn, start sharing your posts as well. This allows your posts to gain more visibility in the long run.
Change #3- Fix Your SEO
I’m not a big advocate of on-site SEO. For the most part, when you are trying to learn how to make money with a blog, you want to get noticed on the search engines. This is the purest form of traffic, but sometimes it comes through whoring your posts out so they can be noticed by the bots. This affects the way the reader sees your blog. Even though Google can see it great, having too many keywords in your posts will affect your viewer, and perhaps even make you lose a potential sale.
So what to do? You want to be noticed organically through the search engines, however, you also don’t want to have a negative impact on your readers.
If you haven’t heard yet, Google actually places a high value on the content that is in your blog. I’m not saying that you should totally forget SEO on your posts, but lay low a little. If you have content that is awesome, Google will notice anyway. So I guess you can refer back to the top of this post!
Off-site SEO can help
Even though I may not approve of on-site optimization with over-stuffing your posts with keywords, what I do recommend for your published post is inbound links. This is what you are generally shooting for. When people link back to that post, you have a better opportunity to get noticed online. This is the purest form of an inbound link…when someone puts that link in a deep link form on their site. So, once again, creating great content is what you are shooting for.
However, there are other ways to create inbound links to your posts. Now I’m not talking about article marketing. Even though there is no definite answer from Google about whether this is a good or bad form of link building, I would stay away from it anyway since Google recently slapped a prominent article marketing service not too long ago.
What you need to do is to use Web 2.0 tools to link back to your posts. This is a tedious job, I know, but once again, you are forced to create content to build links. Click the link above in order to learn how Web 2.0 tools can help you learn how to make money with a blog.
Another great form of link building is through commenting on other people’s sites. In a guest post I did about Link Building vs Social Media I divulge how this is probably the only true form of link building that I do for this site. *There’s a deep link for ya, Enstine!

This is going to take some time. First of all you are going to have to get noticed. Noticed by Google, and noticed by other bloggers. Provide them with information that says you are going to be here for the long haul. Making money through blogging doesn’t happen overnight.
